Life, Inspiration and Writing NaNo

Posted on Nov 4 2009 by Nika

I frequently find myself fielding the question, ‘where do you find the time to write’ ? And you know, half the time I have no idea how to even answer, because, honestly? I don’t know! ^_^

Life

My life is incredibly busy, and some days I swear I get 4 hours of sleep because my brain is constantly trying to move on to the next project, the next item on the to-do list, the next plot. Do I wish I could write full time? Oh Hells ya’. Can I? Not yet. But someday, my pretties! Someday! Right now, on top of being a full-time Mom, I juggle several web design and development freelance projects, part time instructing (College level), consulting and contract work. I also play hockey two nights a week and manage both teams. I carry Hot Wheels in my purse, but I’m rarely able to find a pen. My blackberry (crackberry) is my best friend. I sent over 2000 text messages last month, and probably just as many emails. I blog, I Twitter, I Facebook, I Rock Band, I read.

And… I write. Fanfiction. Novels. NaNo.

Makes you wonder where I find the time, huh!

Inspiration

What inspires me to write, is life! (See above). Some how, through all the insanity, my brain still finds time to pull out plots and scenes, and develop characters. My muse is music, and any music will do. I listen to punk, rock, oldies, folk, Rat Pack, movie soundtracks, top 40, country, classical. Sometimes a certain scene is inspired by a specific song, other times the plot only seems to flow when I play music by a certain artist. Second Chances was written almost entirely to Nickelback. For some reason, nothing else would do. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s don’t mess with the muse!

Writing

Writing, to me, is an adventure. It’s a time when I can climb the high diving board above all the things I’m doing and jack-knife into another world. I use writing to split the crazy days. There are definitely times when I can’t get a scene out of my head, and no matter what I try to concentrate on, it will not leave me be until I put it down on paper (or laptop). Then once the scene or section is out of my head, it’s safe once again to get back to what I was really supposed to be doing. Like… grocery shopping. Did I mention I have no food in the house?

And of course, I’ve just added the psychotic call of the NaNo, or to the rest of the world, National Novel Writing Month. ^_^ A personally set goal, pinky-promised to oh, a smidge over 120,000 of your international writing buddies, to write a 50,000 novel in 30 days during the month of November.

Yeah. I know. I’m crazy.

But, it sure beats being normal!

Hugs!
